Hertsmere, and its predecessor constituency South Hertfordshire, have been Conservative since 1974. The Conservative majority in 2019 was large, with Labour in a distant second place. However, opposition parties did well in the local elections in May 2023. In parts of the seat the Lib Dems are the main challengers in local elections, but across the seat as a whole the contest is between Conservative and Labour.
